Grants The Cumberland Bar Association ("CBA") was established in the 1860’s to educate members in the ethics of the profession, to generally conduct the activities of a professional association and to hold funds for the support of the Cleaves Law Library. In 1997, the Law Library was established as a separate 501(c)(3) organization. Currently, the purposes of the CBA are as reflected in the Mission Statement-- "To enhance the professional lives of our members and to improve the administration of the law by promoting civility, collegiality, education and justice." The Cumberland Bar Association has recently sought to support its mission to increase access to justice through the creation of the Cumberland Bar Association Public Interest Fellowship through the University of Maine School of Law. The CBA hopes to continue this Fellowship on an annual basis each Spring to encourage Maine law students to consider public interest law as a career and provide some support to Maine's legal aid providers. The CBA has allocated $1,500 for 2007 in additional grant funds for discrete projects that support access to justice. Proposals may be submitted at any time throughout the year and will be reviewed with 6 weeks of submission.
