Lawyers as Guardians of Justice:
Upholding the Rule of Law in a Time of Crisis
May 13, 2025
12:00-1:15 p.m.
Via Zoom
Description:
In the face of rising political rhetoric aimed at judges and lawyers, the legal profession is being called upon to stand firm in defense of judicial independence and the rule of law. This timely CLE—offered in recognition of Law Day, a national observance dedicated to the ideals of justice and equality under the law—invites attorneys to examine their ethical and constitutional duty to protect the integrity of the legal system.
Anchored by a 2025 letter signed by hundreds of Maine attorneys in response to threats against legal institutions, the session explores recent national developments, including the Chief Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court’s 2024 Year-End Report highlighting the “need” for bar associations to protect judges from intimidation. Participants will analyze case studies involving retaliation against law firms and judges, reflect on First Amendment protections, and consider how the legal profession can collectively respond to government overreach. Participants will also consider public statements by the American and Maine State Bar Associations affirming lawyers’ obligations to stand up for the Constitution and the independence of the judiciary.
Through discussion, reflection, and practical strategies, this CLE offers tools for legal professionals to engage in advocacy that reinforces public trust in the rule of law and the vital role of lawyers in a democratic society.
